Kids hit the high seas at church
By Thomas Shirtliffe Sometimes just reading the Bible isn't fun enough for kids. Th ey want to have fun, play games and watch videos. Local pastor, Chris Jordan, knew that and he put them all together to help kids learn about God and the Bible in a fun and interactive way. With the theme this year called 'High Seas Expedition,' Jordan had a large ship displayed on the stage in his church and had wheels and anchors on display on the walls. Sixty kids got to hit the decks throughout the week, playing games, having snacks and watching video. All of this was done with God's words in mind. "We're trying to teach them about God," Jordan says. "Th is way makes it fun for the kids." Each day brought a new subject for the kids. Monday was 'God's word is true', Tuesday was 'God's word is comforting', Wednesday was 'God's word is surprising", Th ursday was 'God's word is life changing', and Friday was 'God's word is for everyone'. With each day bringing something different, Jordan is able to teach the kids the scripture from the Bible as it pertains to the subject of the day.

Comprehensive Eye Exams, Spectacles & Contact Lenses fitted Each day the kids were asked to find God at one point in their day in a game called "God Sightings". When the kids found something, they wrote it on a sticky piece of paper and stuck it to a large poster, painted to look like the sea. Some things the kids wrote were: "I saw someone help someone up after they fell," "A lady bug," "Lightning," More kids have been coming out to the VBS. Almost half are not even from the area. "We're getting more people to come this year," says Kim Friesen, a member of the church who has two kids in the camp as well. Just under 50 kids were out the previous year. "We have a lot of community involvment this year. Kids are coming from other churches." After the five days of singing, playing games, watching videos and above all else, learning about God, Jordan hopes that the kids can take at least one thing away from the camp. "The most important thing is to know how special they are," Jordan says. "And that they are all loved by God."
