Young boxer to defend title in Kansas City at 2010 Ringside World Championships
Gross looking ahead to Olympics
By Thomas Shirtliffe Jessica Gross will be taking on the big girls when she heads to Kansas City next week for the 2010 Ringside World Championships. Gross, a two time national champion, is the defending world champion at Ringside but will be in a tougher group this year as she will be facing more experienced boxers this time around. Gross will be in the 17-34 open division this year. "Future Olympians are going to be there," says coach Kirk Fleming, owner of Eastman Boxing Club where Gross and other boxers train for this upcoming world championship. Last year, Gross was fighting in the 15-16-year-old division and was unbeaten on her way to the championship. She even won the Best Boxer Award, awarded to the best boxer in their respective division. Gross says she was nervous going into last year's fi ghts, but how is she feeling about going into fi ghts with older and more experienced women? We'll let Gross tell you herself. "It's going to be scary," she says. But Gross knows the importance of the upcoming fi ghts. "I'm in a new weight and a new age," she says. "Win or lose I'll get something out of the fi ghts." Gross and her coach already know one of the fighters who Gross will be taking head on: Debbie Richards. She's a fi ve time Canadian National Champion, but took a fi ve year layoff . Richards is 31 years old, nearly twice the age of Gross. Being a boxer has always been the goal for Gross. Her role model is her own brother, Kyle Gross, who is a national champion himself. With women's boxing now being an event at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Gross hopes to take them by storm with her brother by her side. "I'm speechless when thinking about it," she says. Competing in the Olympics became a reality just last year when she became the world champion at the 2009 Ringside. "She's one of the best boxers in Canada," Fleming says. Gross will not be the only boxer heading down to Kansas City from the Eastman Boxing Club. Eight other fi ghters will be competing and fighting south of the border. Gross and Lucas Jannsson will be the only ones who are returning, the rest will be making the trip for the fi rst time. But that isn't leaving any sign of worry on Fleming's face. He's confident in his young group of boxers. "I'm pretty sure we're going to come home with some hardware," Fleming says. Th e Eastman Boxing Club leaves Monday for the championship which goes from Aug. 2-7.
Farmer's market taking off
By Edna Barrie The first Farmers' Market organized by Mireille Clark was held July 23. Clark recently moved to the Beauserjour area from Winnipeg and has always been an avid user of such markets. "Thanks to the generosity of Rodney Wohlgemuth, owner of Green Oak Gardens, we have a market site. Th is is a perfect location for vendors to show their wares," said Clark. Money for start-up expenses was received from the town of Beausejour and the RM of Brokenhead. Canopies were received through a grant from the Farmers' Markets Association of Manitoba Co-op Inc. "Before, you didn't have to register," she says. "I don't know if that is holding them back, but I don't think they quite understand it." On the town side of things there is ery was full," she said. Th e market is open every Friday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. With the 382 farms in the area, markets like this one give producers an additional outlet to supplement their income and to sell off some of their excess produce. Th ere is always someone looking for fresh homegrown produce. "From this day and every Friday until Sept. 3, a Farmer's Market will be held here," Clark said. Last Friday there were locally-grown vegetables and gifts and crafts. Vendors selling their produce or hobbyists selling their crafts pay $10 to secure a site and proceeds are to be donated to a local group. "I am very impressed," Shirley Rattai, a vendor of farm products, said. "Th e adver- Doris Koss, the Senior Election Offi cer for Beausejour. She is facing a similar problem. With Saluk as a candidate for mayor, there are two council seats open as Saluk is leaving his position open. But, Koss says that those who were interested in being a council member and not the mayor have had less time to apply. This day, there were five vendors in attendance. It is expected more vendors will participate in the following weeks. Next week, cucumbers will be in season and available. All produce is fresh and crisp. Floral arrangements will also be on display. Even with the temperatures as warm as they have been, people were shopping at the hobby tables looking for unique Christmas gifts. Clark mentioned that if anyone, farmer, hobbyist, or baker, wishing to be a vendor at the market, might do so by contacting M. Clark at 268-3199 or check out the website at www.beausejourmarket.webs. com until June 30," she says. But when it comes to having enough candidates to hold an election, Koss isn't worried. "Each election is different," she says. "Th ey'll come out of the woodwork." Papers for both the RM and the town can be picked up at their respective offices. Twenty-five signatures are needed in both areas to be nominated. Voting takes place Oct. 27. 10075mm03
