Minister ?guarantees? government support

Next step for Park Avenue will be determining how much, and when, money will fl ow

By Donna Delaurier Th ere were plenty of smiles over wine and cheese, and some good-natured joking that Park Avenue might be renamed Ashton Avenue, but the business at hand was provincial cash and Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation Steve Ashton gave every indication he?s willing to pitch in. ?I can tell you one thing, Beausejour is going to be very much on our minds,? Ashton said following a presentation of the Park Avenue reconstruction project by Mayor Don Mazur. ?We?re going to be there from MIT (Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation). I can guarantee you that.? Mazur opened the evening ? a wine and cheese gathering in council chambers ? by putting the meeting?s signifi cance into perspective, basically calling it the culmination of 30 years of work. ?We think this is a very momentus occasion, a historical occasion,? Mazur said. He treaded lightly in his next sentence when he lowered his voice to a whisper and mentioned the switch from angle to parallel parking as part of the reconstruction. Th ere were some chuckles at the mayor?s handling of what has been a contentious issue over the years, but Ken Zirk, a member of the project?s steering committee, gave reasurance there was no need for Mazur to mute his tone. ?Nah, that?s been discussed,? Zirk said to the small crowd of about 20. Mazur continued and said reconstruction of Beausejour?s main street has been discussed by numerous councils over the years, and disagreements ? often over bringing in parallel parking ? deep sixed the project time and time again. ?It suff ered the same fate everytime,? Mazur said. But it?s looking like the project?s time has come. Continued on p. 2 Photo by Donna Delaurier Ashton called the push to reconstruct Park Avenue forward thinking ? ?this is about looking ahead to the next 50 years?.
