Karibu! That's how staff, students, and their famiies at Hazelridge School recently welcomed imon Nabukwesi, Kenya's High ommissioner and the country's ambassador o Canada. The Swahili greeting delighted Nabukwesi, ho was already thrilled to meet with the tudents and share his love of Kenya with hem. "Over the past few weeks, our students ave been reading different facts about enya," explained Lana Gardner, principal f the school. One of the books, Kenya ABC, eaches students about Kenya using the lphabet. The students recited several examles, such as I is for Indian Ocean. They oted the Kenyan city of Mombasa, the ountry's largest port, is on the coast of the ndian Ocean. "Students also had visual views of differnt parts of Kenya through the internet," ardner added, noting this included scenes rom the capital city, Nairobi. Showing the tudents a modern, African city was espeially powerful since Nairobi's glittering kyscrapers and flower-filled parks stand in tark contrast to stereotypes about Africa. hey also had a look at Lake Victoria, the argest lake in Africa, and admired the varius animals in Kenya. Nabukwesi was surprised by the extensive nowledge the students had about Kenya and as touched by their warm hospitality.
